Split a transaction

Divide one transaction across multiple categories when a single purchase spans more than one spending type.

Prerequisites

• Big Picture Money is unlocked
• At least one categorized transaction exists (or create one first)

Steps

1. In the left navigation, click Transactions.
2. Locate the transaction to split (for example, a $100 grocery run).
3. Click Split on the row (or open the detail panel and choose Split transaction).
4. In the split editor:
   • Line 1: select Groceries, enter amount 80.00
   • Line 2: select Household (or another category), enter amount 20.00
5. Confirm the lines sum to the transaction total ($100.00).
6. Click Save.

Expected result

• The register shows a split indicator in the category column (for example, "Split (2)")
• Each split line retains its own category and amount
• The account balance is unchanged — splits affect categorization only, not the transaction amount
• Saving with mismatched totals (for example, $60 + $30 for a $100 transaction) shows a validation error
• A single-category transaction can be converted to a split and back by removing split lines
