Search and filter transactions
Narrow the transaction register by date, account, category, tag, text, or cleared status. Save a filter set as a view when you want to reuse it or pin it to the left navigation.
Use transaction filters when you want a list you can work from. Use Spending when you want a chart-first view of spending by category.
Prerequisites
- Big Picture Money is unlocked
- At least one transaction exists (optional — filters work on empty registers too)
Quick paths
| Goal | How |
|---|---|
| Filter once without saving | Transactions → Filters → Apply |
| Save or pin a reusable register | Transactions → Filters → Save options..., or Manage views |
| Open a saved register | Click a pinned view under Views, or use the view picker on the register |
| Manage all views | Transactions → Views |
See Filter transactions for the full filter dialog workflow.
Open an account register
- Under Transactions, expand the submenu.
- Under Views, click the pinned view for that account (for example, Main Checking).
The register shows that account’s transactions with a running Balance column. Use Reconcile or Import from this view when needed.
Account views are created automatically when you add an account. Manage them on the Views page.
Transaction filters vs Spending filters
Transaction filters and views are for reusable registers. Spending filters are for visual analysis: date range, accounts, tags, payee search, and category drill-down from the chart.
Both use the same transaction data. If you apply the same date, account, tag, payee, and category filters in both places, the matching transactions should agree. Spending also applies a spending-only rule, so income, transfers, and credit card payments are excluded from Spending totals.
Expected result
- Filters narrows the register; Clear returns to all transactions
- Pinned views open filtered registers from the left navigation
- Account views show a running balance for that account
