Filter spending

Spending filters help you answer visual questions quickly, such as "what did I spend on this card last month?" or "how did vacation spending break down by category?"

Steps

  1. Open Spending from the left navigation.
  2. Choose a date range:
    • Current week
    • Current month
    • Last month
    • Last 30 days
    • Last 3 months
    • Year to date
    • Custom range
  3. Optionally choose one or more accounts.
  4. Optionally choose one or more tags.
  5. Optionally type in Payee search to narrow by merchant or description.
  6. Click a category slice in the chart to filter to that category and its subcategories.
  7. Use Clear filters to return to current month, all accounts, no tags, no payee search, and all categories.

Spending filters vs transaction filters

Spending filters are for charts and drill-downs. They are temporary and focused on spending analysis.

Transaction filters and views are for reusable transaction lists. Use them when you want to save a register view, pin it to the left navigation under Views, or build a detailed rule set across many transaction fields.

Both use the same transaction data and category/tag rules. If you filter Spending and Transactions to the same date range, account, tag, payee, and category, the transactions should match.

Spending always applies a spending-only rule: income, transfers, and credit card payments are not counted as spending.

Expected result

  • The chart and transaction list update together when filters change.
  • Category drill-down filters both the chart and the transaction list.
  • Spending totals exclude transfers between your own accounts.
  • Views are created from Transactions or the Views management page, not from the Spending page.
