Uninstall the app

You can remove Big Picture Money from your computer at any time. Uninstalling the application does not delete your encrypted data file by default. Your accounts and transactions stay on disk until you remove them yourself.

Before you uninstall

  1. Quit Big Picture Money completely (close the window; on macOS, quit from the app menu if it stays in the Dock).
  2. If you might need your data later, back up your data file first.
  3. If this computer used a license slot and you will not reinstall here, remove the device on the website so the slot is free for another machine.

Uninstall the application

Windows

  1. Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps (on older Windows, Apps & features).
  2. Find Big Picture Money.
  3. Select Uninstall and follow the prompts.

You can also open the Start menu, find Big Picture Money, and choose Uninstall if Windows lists that action.

macOS

  1. Open Finder → Applications.
  2. Drag Big Picture Money to the Trash.
  3. Empty the Trash (or right-click the app in Trash and choose Delete Immediately).

Linux

How you remove the app depends on how you installed it:

  • AppImage: Delete the AppImage file you downloaded. If you created a desktop or menu shortcut yourself, remove that shortcut too.
  • Debian/Ubuntu (.deb): Open your software center (or package manager), find Big Picture Money, and remove it. From a terminal you can also use your distribution’s usual remove command for that package.

Your data after uninstall

Uninstalling leaves your data folder in place so a reinstall can open the same ledger with your passphrase.

Operating systemDefault data folder
Windows%LOCALAPPDATA%\BigPictureMoney
macOS~/Library/Application Support/BigPictureMoney
Linux~/.local/share/BigPictureMoney (or $XDG_DATA_HOME/BigPictureMoney if set)

If you chose a custom folder during setup, that folder is your data folder instead. See Your data file and Find your data file.

Optional: delete your data permanently

Only do this if you want to erase your local ledger on this computer. This cannot be undone unless you have a backup.

  1. Confirm you have a backup if you need the data later — or that you truly want it gone.
  2. Quit Big Picture Money if it is still installed and running.
  3. In your file manager, open the data folder (table above, or the custom folder you chose).
  4. Delete that folder (or the encrypted .db files inside it).
  5. Empty the Trash / Recycle Bin if your system moved the files there.

Other leftovers

  • Bank sync and AI API keys may still sit in your operating system’s secure credential store after uninstall. To clear bank access before you wipe data, remove the connection in Settings → Bank integration while the app is still installed. Otherwise, remove leftover entries labeled for Big Picture Money from your system keychain or credential manager if you want a full clean-up.
  • The offline merchant recognition catalog ships with the app and goes away when you uninstall; you do not need to back it up.

Reinstall later

Download the complete installer again from the get started / download page (or your purchase email), then follow Installing the app. If your data folder is still on disk, unlock with the same passphrase after install.

Expected result

  • Big Picture Money no longer appears in your applications list / Start menu / Applications folder.
  • Your encrypted data folder remains unless you deleted it in the optional steps.
  • A later reinstall can reuse an intact data folder and passphrase without recreating your accounts from scratch.
