2026.1.12 is our General Availability release. Big Picture Money is out of beta: you can buy a perpetual license on the pricing page, download the installer for your operating system right away, and own your ledger on your machine.

Below are the highlights. See the full changelog for every feature and fix in this build.

This update mostly brings bug fixes and fine-tuning to the UI and existing features as we worked toward our GA release. A lot of fixes for licensing and installations on the different operating systems.

Buy once — Standard or Contributor

Two licenses, same app. The beta program gave us valuable information that helped improve the application for all users. But those improvements came with a requirement to actually report the data we needed. In the full version, users need to opt-in to that reporting, and there is no real incentive for them to do so.

In order to get a constant stream of training data to continue improving the product, we decided to offer a financial incentive to users (after all, your data is valuable, you should be paid for it.) We now offer a $10 discount for a "Contributor" license for users who are willing to report this (completely anonymous!) data and make Big Picture Money better for all users.

After checkout, the success page and your license email include version-specific download links for Windows, macOS, and Linux. There is no separate waitlist or public download page.

Chat that streams and reads your filters

When your AI provider supports streaming, working notes and the final answer appear in the thread as they are generated.

Chat from the Transactions register now sees the filters you already applied (dates, category, account, and Filters-dialog rules), so the assistant can query the same slice of your ledger instead of guessing from text search alone. Send and Stop moved to compact icons on the message box (up arrow to send; stop icon while a reply runs).

Quieter updates and clearer install paths

Background update checks put Update available in the title bar instead of interrupting your work. Download and install progress stays in the bottom-left; after unlock, each data file confirms the version that was applied, with a release-notes link when we published one for that build.

On macOS, the disk image now shows the app, Applications, and a green trend-line arrow so drag-to-install is obvious. Full macOS and Linux installs include the merchant catalog in the bundle; patch updates keep offline matching without asking you to download assets again.

The full list

Smarter chat tool results (currency strings, paging awareness, chart date ranges), budget balance sign and color fixes, YNAB import polish, title-bar search behavior, friendlier screen errors, in-app issue reports with screenshots, Ubuntu .deb updates, fewer macOS keychain prompts, and more landed in 2026.1.12.
